About me

コーヒー焙煎作業

He turned 26 in August 2024.

He was born with an intellectual disability, but it became clear when he was three years old. Looking back, there were signs even shortly after birth, such as the way he drank milk. Every time, he desperately searched for his mother’s breast as if he were a newborn. Normally, he was a quiet baby and rarely cried at night, but during feeding time, he would arch his back with all his strength and struggle to bring his mouth to the right position. He would then close his eyes and drink continuously, falling asleep without even burping once he was full.

Even now, he has a strong interest in food, though he is not a gourmet. He always says, "It’s delicious!" no matter what he eats, which is at least a small relief for those who cook for him.

To overcome his disability, I made him try many unconventional treatments in addition to regular therapy, including supplements, auditory stimulation therapy, and brainwave stimulation. However, none of them had significant effects. His intellectual level remains quite low (IQ 31), but his greatest strength is his honesty.

He started drawing around the age of six. When he was younger, his lines were more complex, but as he grew older, his drawings became simpler. His art is characterized by its simplicity and cuteness. He began learning calligraphy and painting when he was about ten years old and has created many sumi-e (ink paintings) using ink and watercolors.

He loves English and knows many rare and niche words that even native speakers may not be familiar with. English has fewer vowels per word than Japanese, making it easier for him to hear and understand. At school, he was often praised for his English skills, which made him love the language even more. While he has no interest in Japanese books (even picture books), he sometimes enjoys looking up words in an English dictionary.

For painting, he has been attending art classes taught by the world-renowned artist Kenichiro Ina since he was ten. As for calligraphy, he has been studying at the school of Shoko Kanazawa, a famous Down syndrome calligraphy artist, since he was also ten years old.
